Dammam-based COMPACT implements ISO 22000 food safety management system, meeting international statutory and regulatory food safety requirements. The Saudi composite films manufacturer attained ISO 22000 certification in March 2012.

ISO 22000, an international food safety standard, ensures that organizations throughout the food supply chain are safe for food contact. The international standard integrates principles of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system.

ISO 22000 also incorporates application steps developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), the Codex Alimentarius Commission provides food standards and guidelines under the FAO/WHO joint Food Standards Programme.

COMPACT Takes Key Steps to Achieve ISO 22000 Certification

Conducted by certifying body, Lloyds Register Quality Assurance, Stage 1 of the ISO 22000 certification audit took place on 6 February 2012 and Stage 2 of the audit from 8 – 10 March 2012. The first stage covered all documentation required for ISO 22000, while the second stage ensured that COMPACT adhered to the requirements in the documentation.

COMPACT modified infrastructure in accordance with HACCP requirements. The composite film manufacturer linked the printing section with the lamination section and the lamination section with the warehouse.

In order to keep dust and foreign hazards from entering the plant, the manufacturer installed double-door systems at the entrance of each section throughout the plant. Furthermore, to keep hygiene at required levels, COMPACT also installed a double-door system at the employee-entrance with a washing station.

COMPACT introduced several new documentations to fulfill all ISO 22000 and HACCP conditions including:

·    Food Safety Policy
·    Food Safety Manual
·    Internal audit procedure
·    Preventive action procedure
·    Prerequisite programs
·    Corrective action procedure
·    Handling of potentially unsafe products procedure
·    Operational Prerequisite programs
·    Recall Procedure
·    Control of documents procedure
·    Control of record procedure
